Did you know we have a community seed library in Wymondham?
How does it work? It’s very simple – and FREE. Have some seeds you don’t need? Put them in the library. If there are any there you could use, you take them. Don’t have any seeds to donate? Not a problem, you are still welcome to take seeds you could use.
Where is it? In the Wymondham Town Council owned Priory Gardens, almost directly opposite Jarrolds in Middleton Street. (what3words: ///trumpet.crossings.guard.)
What’s the Story behind it? A couple of years ago I was in East Harling and, while walking through their village community garden, spotted a seed library and thought ‘What a great idea. Wymondham could use one of those.’ A bit of Sherlock Holmes detective work later I was put in touch with Craig Jenkins of One Man and His Wood, who made the East Harling library.
Craig very generously offered to make us a seed library for free! An offer that obviously could not be refused 😊. It is a handmade thing of beauty that is built from a number of different UK native woods including oak.
My friend Cllr Lucy Nixon works with Craig’s wife (small world!) so she took delivery via her workplace and passed it to the Council’s grounds staff, who installed it. In December 2023, it was officially ‘opened’ by the Mayor, Cllr Suzanne Nuri-Nixon.
Here’s hoping it proves to be a success in its first year and helps residents grow more of what they want while reducing instances of unwanted seed wastage.
