What’s Your Version of Kindness at Christmas?

What’s Your Version of Kindness at Christmas?

We all have different ideas of kindness.

For some of us, it’s about how we treat others with compassion. Or it could be about how we give time or money to others. It can even be about how we treat nature.

Why not give somebody a charity shop gift card?

At Christmas time, you can show kindness in so many ways:

  • gifting (volunteering) your time to a charity;
  • gifting your time in the form of promises;
  • making gifts;
  • Buying pre-loved or refurbished gifts from charity shops. You can even buy a charity shop gift card;
  • buying gifts from ethically responsible businesses or artists.

We’re fortunate that all these feel-good actions are possible in Wymondham, kindly supporting local shops and enterprises. Wondering why Amazon isn’t listed? Would you feel good knowing that you’re supporting a company thought to have avoided around £2.8 billion in UK corporation tax? That’s according to research over 10 years by Ethical Consumer.

Another version of kindness is how we treat ourselves and prioritise mental wellbeing. Engaging in nature can lift moods and reduce stress. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has excellent suggestions in their ‘Prescription for Nature’, supported by Dr Sara Kayat (ITV This Morning). At a local scale, you can get involved with Greening Wymondham on their projects, like the Community Orchard at Browick Road. To make that a gift, invite a friend and go to a café or pub afterwards: an activity they’d enjoy in your company.

Whichever way you consider kindness this Christmas, it will make a difference.
