Putting Sustainability on the Map

So how sustainable is Wymondham?

Seems like a simple enough question, doesn’t it? But what is sustainability and how well is this reflected in life in the town?

From the perspective of Sustainable Wymondham, we use the word sustainable from an ecological perspective, rather than say a business or civil view.

This means that all human activity, such as business, construction, food & energy production and so forth, should take into account its impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems so that they are preserved and improved for future generations. See the definition for sustainability on Wiktionary (free online dictionary).

With regards to how can we ensure that Wymondham functions in such a way, we can look at what services, businesses and amenities (including our own lifestyles) can deliver, impact or enhance this ambition.

In order to help you find more sustainable ways of living, we have set up a map of where you can find these services and amenities in the town.

For example, buying goods secondhand (or pre-owned to use a more modern term) is a great sustainable activity. Not only do you find goods at much cheaper prices than if you bought them new, but you also reduce the need for society to produce new products from scratch, which is a burden on the world’s limited resources. So, all of the charity/ second-hand shops are shown on the map to allow you to find them more easily.

We hope that people will use the map to help them make more sustainable choices for modern living and so we have structured it in a way to make it accessible and useful. The map has an information panel which contains help on how to use it. Please do let us know what you think about it and if it can be improved.

Have you got something you’d like to be added to the map? If so, please get in touch with your suggestions or ideas and we’ll do our best to put it on the map.
